Hyderabad: A 40-year-old resident of Mehdipatnam, Malati, who was going to her native place in Chittoor to celebrate Sankranti, along with her family members, was burnt to death when the bus in which she was travelling caught fire.

The mishap occurred at Beechupally under Itikyal police limits in Jogulamba Gadwal district on Saturday. Seven passengers, who suffered minor injuries, were shifted to the government hospital in Kurnool.

Jogulamba Gadwal superintendent of police (SP) Ritiraj said that around 2.30 am on Saturday, the driver of a private bus with passengers on board, belonging to Jagan Travels, lost control and the vehicle overturned on NH-44 near 10th Battalion near Beechupally.

"Immediately after receiving information, we rushed to the spot. We rescued 36 passengers. Even though we tried to save everyone, Malati, who was trapped under the bus, could not be rescued," the SP said.

The bus caught fire due a short circuit.

“It was the negligence of the driver that caused the mishap. A case has been registered," said Ritiraj.
