Members of Citizens for Bengaluru stage a protest for suburban rail, in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Bengaluru: While most of Bengaluru was asleep early Sunday, 25 people were present at Lalbagh standing frozen at 7 am,  not because of the chilly morning, but in an attempt to attract attention of morning walkers and citizens towards the importance of a suburban rail for the city. The #ChukuBukuBeku campaign, organized by Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) organised a similar freeze mobs near M.G. Road as well.

The freeze mob at Lalbagh lasted 10 minutes at the West gate, inviting curious onlookers. Many were not even aware that this project has been on hold for 3 decades and if implemented they could travel from Whitefield to Majestic in just 35 minutes. CfB plans to organise similar freeze mobs at various parts of the city next week.

Various citizen groups have also joined the cause K.R. Puram Rising and will take part in a rail yatra on December 17. Mala Sugantha, a member of Narayanapura workers’ colony, highlighted the cause of construction workers who find travelling to the city very expensive, time consuming and resulting in lesser wages.

Much like the human chain formed for #Steelflyoverbeda, the Rail Yatra will start at 9 am from Cantonment station, with campaigners taking the train to Whitefield.

The suburban rail service can be implemented on the existing tracks and complement BMRCL's metro rail in easing the pressure on city’s road, said activists.
