KOCHI: Business in the district came to a standstill on Tuesday as wholesale traders and retailers downed the shutters to protest against the faulty implementation of Goods and Services Tax. The strike called by Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) was almost total with only very few medical shops and fruit stalls stayed open. Meanwhile, hotels and restaurants didn’t participate in the shutdown strike.

Representatives of the traders’ association took out protest march to Kanayannur taluk office. Representatives of All India Vyapari Vyavasayi Congress  alleged on Monday that enforcement squads are torturing and registering against traders unnecessarily in the name of implementing GST. They urged the state government to hold effective discussions to clear concerns and delays in implementing GST. The traders have demanded more time to implement the new tax regime.
