KOZHIKODE: Pathanamthitta district child protection unit (DCPU) has submitted a proposal to the education minister to introduce activity-oriented learning in tribal settlements to attract kids. The DCPU took the initiative after such a programme prompted more tribal children to attend classes recently. “We have recommended training all the teachers of Attathod, Moozhiyar and Gavi areas to use innovative methods like theatre techniques, songs and play in classrooms so as to make learning fun,” said district child protection officer A.O. Abeen.

A three-day camp organised by DCPU from February 28 at Government U.P School Moozhiyar with puppetry, origami and theatre workshop had got an overwhelming response from the children. “After the camp, six more children from the tribal area began to attend classes regularly. Some other kids are also keen to come to school,” says Hussain Chavadi, the headmaster of the school.
As a part of the camp, organisers visited tribal settlements with band troupe, dance and play.

During such an interaction, children expressed their interest in coming to school provided there are such entertainments. The attrition rate of students in this area is high and teachers have to put in all techniques to woo them back to school after every weekend. “Earlier, the food was the biggest problem. Now, three are meals a day in tribal areas,” said Mr Abeen. Shoba Koshy, the chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, had visited the area and took note of problems tribal children face.
