Kochi: The police have  found prima facie medical negligence in the death of  Jerin Michael,  25,  at the Ernakulam Government Medical College on March 25. Kalamassery CI S. Jayakrishnan told DC on Tuesday that  he  had  forwarded the file to the Thrikkakara assistant commissioner of police, who is the competent authority to investigate such cases. “In our investigation we could identify that proper care was not given to Jerin when he came to the hospital,  nor  was he referred to another hospital for better care. He was not operated upon nor scanning was done at the right time,”  Mr Jayakrishnan said. “It is not a case where wrong drug or overdose was administered,” he said.

The case will have to be considered by the district medical board and the ACP will have to investigate it as per law. “The post-mortem report points to septic shock leading to his death following appendicitis. The final opinion has been reserved pending laboratory result,” he added. Meanwhile, a doctor at the Alappuzha TD Medical College told DC that the histopathological report, which is the lab report, also confirmed that septic shock following acute appendicitis had led to the death. “However,  there are issues of him not getting timely care which is understood to have led to his death and courts have to arrive at conclusions based on police investigation and report,” he said.
