Mumbai: Two days after deploying clean-up marshals to keep a check on residents leaving behind their pet’s poops on Marine Drive promenade, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have fined three people for not cleaning the litter.

According to reports, the BMC collected Rs 500 each from three people who did not pick up poops of their pets from the promenade. However, it let off five pet owners with warning when they agreed to clean up the poops.

BMC officials said that they are not being harsh on the pet owners initially and letting off people who are willing to clean up their pet’s poops.

The BMC had earlier said that the marshals would initially ask the pet owners to clean up the poops of their pets and let them go if they abide by the instruction. But fines will be imposed on those who refuse to pick up the litter, it had said.

The decision was taken after an increase in complaints from locals who spotted poops littered on the promenade.

The BMC deployed clean-up marshals along the 3.5-km stretch of Marine Drive promenade from 7am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm to ensure cleanliness in maintained in the area visited by both domestic and foreign tourists.
