Mother, child killed in Libya, cremated at Veliyannur

The couple was planning to return for good by the middle of April.

Kottayam: The funeral of Sunu Vipin, 29, and her son Pranav Vipin, 18 months, who died in a shell attack at Zawiya in Libya were held at their house at Veliyannur in the district on Saturday.

The bodies were brought to the Cochin airport around 8.30 am and to their home around 12 pm. Kottayam MP Jose K. Mani, Kaduthuruthy MLA Mons Joseph, K.M. Mani MLA and LDF convener Vaikom Viswan reached there to pay their last respects.

Vipin Kumar, the husband of Sunu, also accompanied the bodies. Mr Kumar’s father Damodaran Nair, elder brother Thulaseedharan Nair and Sunu’s family members found it hard to control their emotions. They were seeing the 18 month-old for the first time, as the child, was born in Libya.

They were killed on March 25 in a shell attack on their apartment at the Zawiya Medical Centre where Mr Kumar worked. He was away when the shell struck.
Sunu had resigned her job as a nurse last year after she failed to get her salary.

The couple was planning to return for good by the middle of April.  She could have returned much earlier if she had received the exit visa. Natives of Kondadu near Ramapuram,  they married on August  25,  2012, and she joined him there after three months of their marriage.
