Chennai: Mystery shrouds the death of a two-and-half year-old girl child, whose body was found in an empty plot, half a kilometer from her house in Villivakkam on Wednesday morning.

The child’s parents had filed a complaint with the police on Tuesday night after the child went missing since Tuesday evening.

Police said that, at the time of recovery, blood was oozing from the child’s nose and she was also frothing. The deceased child, Kavya was the only child of the couple, Venkatesan (27)- Jayanthi (23). The family moved to the house at Bharathi Nagar in Villivakkam only three months ago, police said.

Venkatesan sells snacks at Marina beach and was away at work while the child and mother were alone at home. Jayanthi went to a store nearby to buy groceries leaving the child inside the house, only to find the child missing when she returned.

Alarmed, she informed her husband and the couple made futile searches in the neighbourhood before approaching the Vilivakkam police.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, a local spotted the child’s body at the empty plot and informed the parents. Police secured the body and moved it to Government Kilpauk medical college and hospital for autopsy.

Police are questioning the parents and neighbours with whom the couple reportedly had a tiff few days ago. Preliminary investigations suggest the child to have died of drowning, a senior police officer said.
