Chennai: Within the next two years, eight A1, 42 A and 26 B category stations in the Southern Zone are likely to be equipped with Cloud-based Railway Display Networks. These displays will be IP-based displays and are being set up by RailTel, the telecom arm of Railways.

Moving towards Digital India aim of the Union government, these 76 stations will be among over 2,000 stations across India that would be equipped with Cloud-based displays for train and platform information, seat availability and berthing information.

“RDN screens will replace all other mediums of advertising and relaying train-related information at stations. Screens will be put up at accessible locations providing visibility to a large number of people such as platforms and waiting halls,” said a RailTel official.

To ensure revenue inflow from the screens, 50 percent of the screen will display information related to Railways and the rest would be advertisements. The screens will have both audio and video facilities like the current screens. The official also added that large screens would be deployed at main entrances, concourse areas and foot over bridges. These screens will be ‘Cloud-controlled’ which will allow effective monitoring of the content.

Railway officials added that this move is not just towards Digital India but to promote neater stations with enhanced aesthetics. “We are ensuring that other posters will be removed and premises look presentable,” said an official.
