Clean drive yields southern railways Rs 71,000

Chennai: In the weeklong cleanliness (Swachchta) drive organised during the last week of September, 323 defaulters in Chennai division were fined for defacing property by littering and spitting, earning the divisional railways Rs 71,000.

During the Cleanliness Week from September 17 to 25, all defaulters were fined Rs 100-500 for various offences.

Apart from beautification of station premises, drives on garbage handling and disposal, inspections by senior officials and interaction with passengers were held.

“We provided dustbins, and an intensive drive was undertaken on all the days in various forms. For spitting and littering station premises people were fined,” said a senior Southern Railway official.

“We have periodic interactions with slum dwellers where they are advised against open defecation,” said another official.
