WARANGAL: People belonging to tribal communities were the poorest ethnic groups in the society, said All India Congress Committee women’s wing general-secretary and MLA Seethakka, and appealed to the officials concerned, especially those of the forest department, to understand their problems and resolve them.

Seethakka participated in the World Tribal (Indigenous) Day celebrations organised by Thudum Debba and hoisted the Adivasi flag and paid floral tributes to the martyrs who lost their lives fighting for the rights of Tribal people in Mulugu district on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Seethakka said there were several issues pertaining to the Adivasi people not only in the state, but also across the nation and in the world. So to discuss their problems and find a solution, the United Nations Organisation decided to observe August 9 as World Tribal Day in recognition of the first meeting of the UN working group on indigenous populations of the sub-commission on the promotion and protection of human rights held in Geneva in 1982, she said.

Even before the declaration of the World Tribal Day, people who belonged to weaker sections formed several separate organisations and associations and took up several movements for their rights. "By fighting in Parliament, we are able to achieve the Forest Rights Act,” she said.

But the officials of the forest department were trying to remove the Forest Rights Act in the name of reserve forest and also trying to suppress the people belonging to tribal communities, instead of understanding their problems and resolving them.

The youth of the present generation belonging to tribal communities must strive hard to fulfil the dreams and aspirations of Komaram Bheem and must protect the culture and traditions followed by tribal people, she appealed.

District medical and health officer Dr Allem Appaiah, Mulugu Zilla Sadhana Samithi president Bikshapathi, Cintha Kranthi, Kompelli Srinivas Reddy and J. Chandrasekhar were present along with others.
