Kozhikode: Students' rain walk to protect nature

Kozhikode: Over 2,500 students undertook a seven-km ‘rain walk’ to the Wayanad ghats on Saturday to emphasise the need to protect nature. Organised by SAVE (Students’ Army for Vadakara Environment),  a project under the Vadakara educational district,  the walk started from Valamthode in Wayanad  at 10. 30 am and ended at St Joseph’s High School ground, Poothampara at 1 30 pm.          

The  students along with teachers and social and green activists shouted slogans against destroying nature and sang songs on the need for  nature conservation, said SAVE district coordinator Vadayakkandi Narayanan. “Divided into small groups, the participants were drenched in rain and they enjoyed it,” he told DC. Started in 2014, the programme covers 1.5 lakh students and 8,000 teachers from 630 schools in the district. While only around 1,000 students participated in the rain walk in 2014, around 1,800 attended it last year.
