Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has postponed its council meeting that had been scheduled on Wednesday following the adverse effects of Cyclone Michaung.

Mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari pointed out that the cyclone has caused disruption in services in the port city. As a result, corporators as well as staff of GVMC are busy in extending relief and restoring services in the city.

In this regard, 78th ward corporator Dr. B. Gangarao of CPI(M) wrote a letter to the GVMC mayor as well as commissioner that it has been raining heavily for the last two days. Life in the city has come to a standstill. Low-lying areas have been severely flooded and landslides have occurred at many places in the hilly areas.

Gangarao felt it will not be right to hold the meeting, as everyone should be focussing on restoring disrupted services and helping people.

Deputy mayors and floor leaders too said at this time, corporators and GVMC officials should be available to the public, especially to take up rehabilitation measures.

Following overall opinion, the GVMC meeting has been put off for the time being, the mayor explained.
