MANGALURU: In a move to enhance runway visibility, Mangaluru International Airport has initiated the installation of runway centerline lights, improving visibility along the 2450m long runway 06/24. The airport had made provisions for the installation of runway centerline lights during the runway recarpeting process. The installation is on track for completion by March 2024.

The airport has availed a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for the duration of the project, and the work is carried out during this notified period to avoid disruptions to regular flight operations. The runway centerline lights, which are inset lights, will complement the already functional runway edge lights and runway threshold lights, serving as visual aids for pilots.

According to the airport spokesperson, a total of 160 centerline lights will be installed with redundancy provisions. Simultaneously, cable ducts are being constructed on either side of the runway to establish secure connections between the centerline lights and the main as well as standby circuits. This redundant setup acts as a failsafe mechanism to ensure uninterrupted aircraft operations.

"The unwavering commitment at Mangaluru International Airport is to prioritize the safety of aircraft operations, and our teams are dedicated to achieving this goal through meticulous efforts," the spokesperson added.
