Khammam: Are some policemen involved in ganja smuggling? Senior cops here have started an investigation after the role of two Armed Reserve (AR) constables was exposed in a case of ganja smuggling.

Satish, an AR constable, was caught while transporting five kilo ganja to Nandigama through Madhira. He confessed that another constable, Venkateswarlu, was also in the deal apart from a jail warder, an engineering student and a lawyer.

The police found that a person in Nelakondapalli used to hoard ganja in various villages in the mandal. Though ganja is not being raised in Khammam, various villages in the district became an adda for transporting the product to other areas.

There were a dozen instances in the last six months, in which ganja worth '50 crore was seized at various places in Khammam and Bhadradri districts.

It emerged that a deal for transporting ganja worth Rs 11 crore was fixed between the ganja cultivators, transporters and sellers. Some police officials might also be involved in the deal, senior cops suspect.

The police have cast a net to nab the other AR constable, the student and other accused. “So far, Khammam district has become a route for illegal transport of ganja. The police are conducting raids in various villages.

Meanwhile, Khammam police commissioner Vishnu Warior said that the police command received 2,142 calls through Dial-100 in October relating to various crimes. Cops filed 76 FIRs on these calls relating to a murder, three murder-attempts, harassment on women, six burglaries, 22 general incidents, 21 accidents and 13 suspected deaths.

He said Dial-100 has proven to be effective. Some people are making fake calls, too, to Dial-100, he said.
