Kakinada: A fishing boat carrying five fishermen capsized in River Godavari within the vicinity of Polavaram project spillway on Sunday evening. While three of them swam to safety, two are missing.

According to one of the survivors Simhachalam, they had ventured into the river on Sunday morning. When they had been returning with the catch in the evening, their boat capsized near the spillway, as the water was swirling in the area

Simhachalam, Posaiah and Veerababu managed to swim to the shore. Two others Surimilli Krishna Murthy (30) and Votala Appala Swamy (25) are missing in the river.

Simhachalam said though other fishermen with another boat have been searching for their missing colleagues, they have not been traced yet.

Polavaram sub-inspector Pawan Kumar said they have registered a case and have started searching for the missing fishermen with special boats.

Project authorities informed that fishing near the spillway area is prohibited.
