Soldier From Nizamabad Swept Away in West Bengal Flash Flood, Many Others Missing

Nizamabad: Lance Naik Niradi Ganga Prasad of Kummanpally in Salura mandal was found dead in the Teesta river in West Bengal on Thursday, swept away in a flash flood on Wednesday. Many of the 23 soldiers in the incident are still listed missing. Army officials informed L/Nk Prasad’s family members on Thursday.

The Army personnel were in transit when calamity hit them after 1 am in Sikkim. The water level in the river suddenly rose by 20 feet, swamping the Army vehicles parked at Bardang near Singtam.

Search operations continued on Wednesday and Thursday. The body of L/Nk Prasad was found 150 kilometres away from the place of the incident, in West Bengal, It has been shifted to Jalpaiguri district hospital for post-mortem.

Bodhan MLA Shakil Amer arranged for flight tickets to Niradi Sudhakar, brother of the victim, and a relative, Dilip, to travel to Jalpaiguri. They will accompany the body to the native place.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dilip said that had hoped that it was a case of mistaken identity but it was not to be.

L/Nk Prasad is survived by his wife Sirisha and two sons aged seven and three years. His father Kashiram is as an employee with the Bodhan municipality.
