HYDERABAD: While the total number of young voters appears to have increased, the overall voters in Telangana's 119 Assembly seats has decreased to 2.99 crore in the special summary revision-2023, from 3.03 crore in 2022.  This was stated to be due to the weeding out of bogus voters, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

According to ECI data released on Thursday, the state's 2.99 crore voters include 1.5 crore male, 1.49 crore female, and 1,951 transgender voters. Interestingly, the number of new voters reached 2,78,650, compared to 70,000 in the last special summary revision, owing partly to the ECI awareness campaigns that encouraged an increasing number of young people to register as voters.

The CEO said that EC organised Election Literacy Clubs (ELC) in 1,700 colleges, where campus ambassadors were identified and SMS alerts were sent to students, to enhance voter enrolment of young people, particularly those aged 18 to 19. In addition to 2.78 lakh youth voters between the ages of 18 and 19, there are 15,282 service voters and 2,740 NRI voters in the latest list.

During the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Programme, more than 12 lakh application applications were received, said chief electoral officer Vikas Raj. After claims and objections, 6,84,408 new voters were added, while 2,72,418 voters were removed from the list. The final roll now stands at 2,99,77,659 voters.

Specific campaigns for tribals such as Kolams, Thotis, Chenchus, and Kondareddis were launched in 361 tribal habitations, and application forms were collected from over 2,800 tribals who were not previously enrolled.
