THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tension prevailed at Maranallor on the outskirts of the city, after a 68-year-old two -wheeler rider was killed while allegedly trying to evade a vehicle checking by local police on Wednesday night. Following a road blockade by protesters, Deputy Collector Biju C visited the spot and promised an inquiry into the case. The deceased was identified as retired Border Security Force (BSF) personnel Vikraman Nair of Vinayaka house, Poovanparambu, Anappadu.

As per the protesters, the man had just started his scooter from near a public library located at Cheenilvila when he came across the police checking. The police tried to chase him  and the panic stricken man rammed into a electric pole injuring himself. He succumbed to head injuries at the Kandala Government Hospital. He leaves behind wife Omana, daughter Ramya and son Vipin who also works with the BSF.

Meanwhile, police officials said they merely hospitalised the man who was found injured on the road.  “The police party was just returning to the station with a man detained after vehicle checking when they came across this accident. They had in fact tried to save him but some local men had used this to target policemen,” said Nedumangadu DySP JK Dinil. A case has been registered against dozens of protesters for staging the blockade.
