A Revanth Reddy opposes making Hindi must in schools

Hyderabad: TPCC working president and MP A. Revanth Reddy on Monday opposed the Centre’s proposal of making the teaching of Hindi compulsory all over the country. He said the proposal would affect the very existence of southern states.

Mr Reddy said the party was opposed to the K. Kasturirangan committee report that recommended that Hindi be made compulsory in schools in the southern states. He asked whether the Centre could make Telugu language compulsory in northern states.  Later in the day, the Centre dropped the contentious provision in the draft education policy.

Mr Reddy said that the Telugu language which stood second in the number of people speaking it had fallen to the third spot due to the negligence of the government.

Vice-President M. Venkai-ah Naidu also spoke against the Centre’s proposal. At a meeting in Tirumala, he said, “Making the learning of Hindi language compulsory is wrong and at the same time, opposing the learning of Hindi is also wrong.”
