Chennai: As against the widely held belief of rise in temperature during Ani Nakshatram starting on Friday, the mercury levels in the city would remain normal. Though the temperature in various parts of Tamil Nadu has crossed 40 degree Celsius much before the onset of Agni Nakshatram, the MET department expects normal temperatures until the wind patterns change.

“The heat waves during next few days is very unlikely as the easterly winds are helping to keep away the extreme temperatures. Though a few districts have witnessed a maximum temperature of around 40 degree Celsius-42 degree Celsius, which is 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal, abnormal condition is very unlikely for next five days. Therefore, Agni Nakshatram will not affect the temperature in the state,” said S. Balachandran, director, Regional Meteorological Centre.

Some parts of Vellore, Tiruvallur, Tiruttani, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Karur, Madurai and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing a rise in temperature during the last few days with Tiruttani reaching 42.6 degree Celsius, followed by Vellore- 42.2 degree Celsius, Karur-41.2 degree Celsius, Trichy- 41.1 degree Celsius and Madurai 41.0 degree Celsius. However, weather bloggers deny spike in temperatures during Agni Nakshatram.

“Kathri Veyil is expected to start in a subdued mode in TN as temperature is not going to spike in next 3-4 days. Contrary to many reports, there will not be any heat wave in Tamil Nadu in the coming days. The temperature is going to be around normal. While Chennai will see around 36 degrees Celsius -37 degree Celsius, airport will see around 38 degree Celsius. These are normal temperatures for May month. Even Vellore, which was clocking 42 C in past few day, but it will record a temperature of around 40 degree Celsius only”, says weather blogger Pradeep John.

Agreeing with Pradeep John, weather blogger K. Srikanth said that weather experts are not expecting any intense heat wave condition for the next few days.

It will be near normal condition, especially abnormal condition is not likely for the north Tamil Nadu.

“Until the wind patterns change to westerly, weather will be normal. Probably, interior areas will continue to expect thunder storms especially in Coimbatore and Erode” he added.
