Kerala: 61 women remanded for blocking national highway

The women were held after they blocked the national highway as part of their agitation.

ALAPPUZHA: Over 60  women contract sanitation workers of Alappuzha TD Medical College Hospital, who were on strike demanding regularisation,  were remanded in judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here on Thursday after they refused the bail offered by the court. The women were held after they blocked the national highway as part of their agitation.  

According to the north police here, 11  women who accepted the bail offer were let off.    Sixty-one others  were sent to Mavelikkara sub-jail. But many of them  were shifted to the jail in  Thiruvananthapuram on Friday owing to lack of facilities at the sub-jail. The workers had been on an indefinite agitation since July 14 in front of the office of the superintendent of  the hospital.
