Panchayat budget to boost disaster relief

An amount of Rs 25 lakh has been earmarked for the task force named Mithram.

Thiruvananthapuram: The district panchayat budget presented by vice-president A. Shailaja Beagum on Saturday announced a task force for carrying out relief activities during natural calamities.

An amount of Rs 25 lakh has been earmarked for the task force named Mithram. The force will be formed with 200 members and they will be trained under the Disaster Management Authority. They will also be provided with instruments needed for disaster mitigation.

The budget also earmarked Rs 40 lakh for Snehathumpi project for turning the district child-friendly. It will ensure the development, participation, welfare and livelihood of children under its jurisdiction. It will also ensure child-friendly local bodies, health, education and safe drinking water and cleanliness to children. They will be protected from misuse and exploitation and educated about the traps on social media. Their talents in sports and arts and their social commitment will be promoted. Balasabhas will also be formed in all grama panchayats in the district.

Another initiative is the Rs 10-crore Padheyam project aimed at a hunger-free district. A total of 5,500 beneficiaries who do not have means to sustain them in 72 grama panchayat will be provided food packets through the Kudumbasree.

The budget has estimated a total revenue of Rs 664,29,51,292  and an expenditure of Rs 648,13,86,000 with a surplus of Rs 16,15,65,292.
