Chennai: Tamil Nadu commission for protection of child rights recommended the closure of websites and social network pages of Peta (People for Ethical Treatment for Animals) and Peta India immediately because of sexually explicit content.

The commission had dispatched a letter on Monday containing their recommendation to chief secretary of Tamil Nadu, secretary of ministry of information and broadcasting, National commission for child rights and TN DGP.

The TNCPCR action came after a Chennai based social activist drew the attention of the commission to the Peta sites saying that children of Tamil Nadu and India were affected by the pornography content and celebrity nudity produced and promoted by the PETA and by its regional offices.

Activist Emi alias Enoch Moses, in his petition, said that a child had told him about nude images of people when she searches for Peta in Google. He further advocates action against Peta under the Pocso Act for committing sexual harassment on children.

“The commission finds that when children search for information about PETA and its activities in the internet, they are made to watch sexually explicit content produced by PETA under the pretence of animal cruelty. The commission had seen that PETA’s websites contain pornographic images, videos and captions which are very harmful for children and also purely a violation of child rights and child laws in India” the commission observed.

The commission had also listed eight harmful publications of Peta on the internet in the communications sent to the head of the Ta mil Nadu police and central and state government secretaries.

The commission recommended that the sites should be blocked immediately so that the children do not watch these harmful images and videos along with appropriate legal action against Peta for publishing such unlawful contents.
