Cochin University of Science and Technology suspends 7 for ragging, violence

The victim said he was attacked by a group of eight students near CUSAT Coffee House on Tuesday evening.

Kochi: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on Friday suspended seven students in the wake of a series of clashes and unrest in its campus since September eight last even as Kalamassery police arrested a Third year Civil Engineering student in connection with the violence. The students suspended by CUSAT management includes three -- Sajad Mohammed Shafi (5th Semester, Mechanical), Jon Joseph Peter (5th Semester, Information Technology) and Danish Yousuf (3rd Semester, Electrical and Electronics) – all SFI activists against whom action was taken based on a complaint of ragging by Muhammed Sherin (1st Semester B Tech (Civil).

“They are suspended pending inquiry. A detailed inquiry into the charges will be held by the University Ragging Monitoring Cell comprising Dr K.V. Pramod, Dr Sobha Cyrus and Dr A.A. Mohammed Hatha,” said CUSAT Registrar Dr S. David Peter. Sherin, who allegedly attempted suicide on Tuesday last, in his complaint claimed he was assaulted and subjected to ragging in the School of Engineering on September 23 when a union had called strike and objected to students attending classes.

Those suspended for a series of clashes in the campus that started with Onam celebration on September 8 include Shahim (5th Semester, Civil Engineering), Fayaz (5th semester, Electrical and Electronics), Shahim (5th semester, Mechanical Engineering) and Fazal, (5th semester, Electrical and Electronics stream). “The disciplinary action was initiated based on reports submitted by separate committees after conducting primary probe,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Kalamassery Police on Friday arrested Third Year Civil Engineering student Kiran S Kunjumon in a case relating to assault of another Engineering student Madhan Krishnan. In his complaint, the victim said he was attacked by a group of eight students near CUSAT Coffee House on Tuesday evening. “The victim suffered injuries including a bone fracture.  He could identify only two attackers. We arrested one and search is on for another student named Sujith,” Kalamassery Sub Inspector Shiju P S.
