KOZHIKODE: “I have not gone missing as claimed by a section of media,”  said Ms A.S. Sainaba, the local guardian of Hadiya alias Akhila, who had triggered a controversy by converting to Islam and marrying her lover,  Shefin Jahan. Ms Sainaba, National Women’s Front (NWF) president and All-India Muslim Personal Law Board member, told reporters here on Thursday that she would initiate  legal action  against those who were trying to defame her.  She said  she had met Hadiya only three years after she converted to Islam.

“ I had taken over the local guardianship of Hadiya who converted to Islam in 2013  following the permission granted by the Kerala High Court  in 2016. I haven’t involved in any mediation for  religious conversion. However,  it was my obligation as a social activist to offer  protection and guardianship to  a girl. The wedding of Hadiya and Shefin Jahan was held in my house as she was under  my guardianship. All legal necessities were met before the wedding was arranged in the Puthoor mahal at  Kottakkal.  A division bench of High Court had also confirmed on September 29, 2016 that the marriage  did  not come under its supervision,” she said.

“There is no situation in Kerala requiring to hide religious converts. Those who embrace a particular religion on their own  need not be kept in hiding. Those who spread lies have no   common sense. The theory of Love Jihad was investigated by the Kerala police and pronounced non-existent by the High Court. This fact is not considered by those who spread lies in the name of IB. They did not even call  me over phone,” she added.
