Patna: In a tragic incident, a student died after allegedly coming in contact with an electric pole while playing cricket on the IIT-Patna campus on Saturday morning, police said. The deceased, a fourth-year BTech student, was identified as S Harshith Patnaik, a resident of Chandanagar in Hyderabad.

The victim was a fourth-year student of a dual-degree programme and had completed an initial three-year course at IIT Patna before moving to IIT Mumbai as part of the programme. He had travelled from Mumbai to attend a farewell event organised by his classmates.

IIT-Patna Security In-charge Deepak Kumar Chaurasia informed police that the student collapsed after suffering an electric shock while playing cricket on the campus around 6 am. He had reportedly leaned against an iron pole and received a severe electric shock and collapsed. "He was taken to Netaji Subhash Medical College, where doctors declared him dead," SDPO (Danapur-2) Amrendra Kumar Jha told reporters. He said the student's family has been informed by both the Amhara police station and the IIT-Patna administration.
