Fadnavis Unveils Development Push For Third Mumbai
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government aimed to make NAINA a symbol of development rather than opposition, with local landholders treated as partners in growth.
Mumbai:Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, on Sunday inaugurated key connectivity projects and launched development works in the NAINA (Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area) region in Navi Mumbai. Describing the project as the ‘Third Mumbai’, the Chief Minister said it would create enormous opportunities. He added that Mumbai’s neighbouring districts of Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad and Palghar would become important engines of Maharashtra’s economic development over the next five decades. Mr Fadnavis also said the planned development of the NAINA region aimed to generate around 15 lakh jobs, including five lakh high-paying employment opportunities. He stressed that local residents would be given priority for jobs created through the project, adding that the government was committed to protecting the interests of farmers and landholders while making them partners in the region’s growth.
Addressing an event to launch development works in the NAINA region and inaugurate the Uran bypass bridge in Raigad district, Mr Fadnavis described the planned urban centre as the “Third Mumbai”, saying it would become a key driver of Maharashtra’s economic growth over the next five decades.
The Chief Minister said the Navi Mumbai International Airport was not merely an aviation facility but a major catalyst for economic development across the surrounding region. “An integrated development plan is being implemented through town planning schemes to ensure systematic and time-bound development of the airport’s influence area. The initiative aims to boost employment generation,” he said.
Mr Fadnavis said the planned development of the NAINA region would go beyond roads, buildings and residential townships, with a focus also on employment, water supply and essential civic amenities. Specialised hubs such as an Education City, Medicity, Sports City, Aerocity and Knowledge City are expected to create diverse economic and social opportunities. He added that NAINA’s development would provide fresh momentum to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Thane and Palghar.
Mr Fadnavis said the government had decided to distribute the relevant land documents to landholders before initiating development works. Accordingly, village-wise surveys, plot identification, verification of ownership records and the preparation of necessary documents were being undertaken. He assured landholders that the state government would continue to support them until their concerns were resolved. The Chief Minister emphasised that development would be undertaken by securing the trust of farmers and safeguarding the interests of local communities.
“Maharashtra is developing multiple growth centres, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur. Along similar lines, the Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad and Palghar region is expected to emerge as a major engine of the state’s economic growth in the coming years,” the Chief Minister said.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government aimed to make NAINA a symbol of development rather than opposition, with local landholders treated as partners in growth.
Mr Shinde said the Navi Mumbai International Airport, Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and new connectivity projects would transform the Panvel-Uran-NAINA belt into a major growth engine for the ‘Third Mumbai’.
