Kolkata: Former Trinamul Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested by the Barrackpore City Police from Odisha on Thursday morning for his alleged role in the hurried cremation of the body of the young doctor who was raped and murdered while on duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital two years ago.

Mr Ghosh, who won on three consecutive terms since 2011 from Panihati where the victim used to reside, is one of the three accused who have been booked in a fresh probe ordered by chief minister Suvendu Adhikari three days ago. He is also the first politician to be held in the case.

The TMC leader was caught at around 9 am on Thursday from a hotel at Puri where he had taken shelter two days ago and was using a new mobile phone and a number to stay in touch with his followers. He will be brought to the state on a transit remand on Friday and will be produced at the Barrackpore Court.

He went into hiding after Mr Adhikari directed a new case be filed against him and his aides, Somnath De and Sanjib Mukherjee on August 9 on the second anniversary of the incident. Chhanda Ghosh, daughter of the arrested TMC leader, however alleged, “My father is innocent. He became the victim of a political conspiracy at the age of 80.”

She also pointed out that her father cooperated with the CBI in its fresh probe by appearing before it while responding to its summons recently. Ms Ghosh wondered why CBI did not take any step against her father if he was involved.
