NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches at several premises in Kolkata and Indore as part of a money-laundering investigation into an alleged investment fraud in which numerous investors were cheated.

Agency officials said about 17 premises linked to the Amrit Group of companies and its promoters were searched in the two cities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The companies and their directors allegedly collected money from the public through various deposit schemes by promising high returns but failed to make the promised repayments.

In a separate case, the central financial investigation agency arrested a Kolkata-based man in connection with a money-laundering probe involving alleged land grabbing and the forgery of land records.

Officials said the accused, Amit Ganguly, was taken into custody in Kolkata on Tuesday night under the provisions of the PMLA.

Ganguly allegedly acquired control over properties belonging to different people and entities by using forged board resolutions, fabricated sale agreements containing forged signatures, fabricated deeds and other documents.

Police have registered as many as 23 FIRs against Ganguly and entities linked to him, officials said.

The alleged illegal acts involved the manipulation of land records, the institution of civil proceedings based on false or fabricated claims and the denial of landowners’ lawful entitlements.

Ganguly and his associates were also accused of using threats and physical force against people seeking to exercise their legitimate rights, officials said.
