ED Attaches Azam Khan University Property Under PMLA
The agency said it had issued a provisional attachment order under the PMLA.
NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday said it had provisionally attached the land and buildings of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan-promoted Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The agency estimated the university's current market value at approximately ₹1,170 crore.
"The university campus at Jauhar Nagar, village Singhankhera, Rampur, is held by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which was founded and is controlled by Mohammad Azam Khan, who is also the honorary Chancellor of the University," the ED said in a statement.
The agency said it had issued a provisional attachment order under the PMLA.
The ED had conducted searches in connection with the case in August and questioned Khan, who is lodged in Rampur jail.
The Lucknow-based trust has Khan, a former Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister, as its principal trustee, along with members of his family and associates.
The trust runs Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, established in 2006, and a public school in Rampur district.
