Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke.

New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Monday questioned the Delhi Police's treatment of students and activists, sharing an old video in which a senior police officer referred to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi as “Sahab” during a press conference.

“Lawrence Bishnoi Sahab. The respect Delhi Police has for gangsters. Wish they showed even 10% of this courtesy to students and activists who are doing nothing but protest,” Dipke said in a social media post.

The video, dating back to August 2025, shows then East Delhi deputy commissioner of police Abhishek Dhania using the honorific while referring to Bishnoi during a press conference. The remark had triggered a controversy at the time, prompting the officer to clarify that it was a slip of the tongue. He reportedly explained that he had recently met a senior officer named Ombir Bishnoi, leading to the inadvertent use of the honorific.

The video resurfaced a day after unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff's car in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday evening. While the actor escaped unhurt, his driver and a bystander sustained injuries.

Following the shooting, a social media message attributed to Anil Pandit and Harman Sandhu, allegedly associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, claimed responsibility for the attack. The message alleged that Shroff had ignored earlier warnings and threatened further attacks on people associated with actor Salman Khan. Mumbai police are investigating the shooting and verifying the authenticity of the claim.

Dipke's criticism comes amid continuing protests by the CJP and student organisations against the Election Commission's revision of electoral rolls. The protesters have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the exercise.

The Delhi Police have detained several protesters during demonstrations in the national capital, including Dipke, who was detained ahead of a protest on Friday.

The CJP has repeatedly criticised the police action against demonstrators, maintaining that students and activists exercising their democratic right to protest should not face intimidation or harsh treatment.

By sharing the old video, Dipke sought to highlight what he described as a contrast between the courtesy shown to a gangster and the treatment meted out to students and activists taking part in protests.
