BHOPAL, Jan 13: Speculations are rife in the Congress circles here that party veteran and former chief minister Digvijay Sigh may return to the Madhya Pradesh politics ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls with his tenure in the Rajya Sabha ending on April nine this year.
Mr. Singh’s presentation on the roadmap for the party’s revival in Madhya Pradesh at the AICC headquarters recently has given rise to such speculations.
“Mr. Singh has given a presentation on the plan to rebuild the base of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh by strengthening the organization from the grassroot level, at the AICC headquarters at Delhi recently. Madhya Pradesh Congress unit president Jitu Patwari and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Umang Singhar, besides in-charge of affairs of party in MP Harish Chaudhary, were present on the occasion”, a senior party functionary told this newspaper here on Tuesday.
Mr. Singh has suggested intense organizational activities such as foot marches, rallies, and holding of small meetings across Madhya Pradesh in the coming two and half years to galvanize the party to go to the 2028 Assembly polls, according to sources.
The veteran leader in fact was seen leading party rallies and actively taking part in the party programmes, besides touring different parts of the state to connect with the party leaders and workers, in the past several months.
Mr. Singh along with former chief minister Kamal Nath had steered the party to power in Madhya Pradesh in 2018 Assembly polls after a gap of 15 years.
However, the Kamal Nath government could last only 15 months with infighting in Congress leading party heavyweight Jyotiraditya Scindia walking out of Congress along with two dozen MLAs to pull it down in March 2020.
Mr. Scindia along with his supporters later joined BJP.
Replying to a question by the media here on Tuesday, Mr. Singh said that the party leadership decides on the responsibilities for the leaders.
“But I can say this much that I am vacating the RS seat”, he quipped.
