Delhi Police Issue Notices To X Accounts Over Posts on PM During Protest

According to police officials, the notices were served after authorities reviewed social media activity linked to the protests, which witnessed widespread participation by students and activists demanding action over the examination controversy. Investigators examined posts, videos and comments shared across multiple platforms to identify content that allegedly violated legal provisions related to offensive or unlawful online communication.

Officials said the account holders have been asked to explain the posts under investigation. The police are examining whether the content breached provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Further legal action will depend on the responses received from the users and the findings of the ongoing investigation.

The action comes amid increased monitoring of online content related to the CJP protests, which began over the alleged NEET paper leak and later expanded into demonstrations demanding accountability from the Centre. Social media played a key role in mobilising protesters and circulating videos, slogans and political commentary during the agitation.

Police officials maintained that the notices are part of a routine legal process aimed at examining potentially unlawful content and ensuring compliance with existing laws governing digital platforms. They added that no conclusions have been reached at this stage and that the investigation is continuing.

Meanwhile, the move has sparked debate over the balance between law enforcement and freedom of expression on social media. Digital rights advocates have urged authorities to ensure that any action against online users is transparent, proportionate and consistent with constitutional safeguards protecting free speech.
