West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari (PTI)

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is likely to make a statement on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, in the state Assembly on Monday.

Besides the UCC Bill, several other key legislations are scheduled for introduction, consideration and passage. These include The West Bengal Backward Classes (Other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) (Amendment) Bill, 2026; The West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (Amendment) Bill, 2026; The West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2026; and The West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026.

The proposed UCC has generated significant political attention in the state, as it was a key promise made by the BJP during the state elections.

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya backed the implementation of the UCC, saying the law would be introduced in every state where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power.

Speaking to ANI, Bhattacharya said the BJP has consistently advocated for the UCC since its formation in 1980. He added that the timeline and implementation process would be decided by the West Bengal government and claimed that many sections of society, including members of minority communities, supported the idea of a common civil law.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also reiterated that the UCC has long been part of the BJP's manifesto. Referring to issues such as "Love Jihad," "Land Jihad" and demographic changes, he said the government was moving forward in line with its stated commitments.

His remarks came after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the UCC would be implemented in West Bengal following a framework similar to those adopted in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Assam.

Addressing the media, Adhikari said a committee headed by a retired judge had been constituted and that details of the proposed UCC would be presented in the Assembly on Monday.
