Railways Roll Out Insurance Option To Those Who Book Tickets At Reservation Counters

HYDERABAD: Indian Railways has extended the insurance option given to online booking through IRCTC, to passengers booking train tickets at the physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters too. They can opt for insurance with a premium of 45 paise per person, from Tuesday onwards.
However, the railways made it clear that for opting the insurance, digital payment of the fare is mandatory, cash payments are not accepted.
The railways explained that across Indian Railways, around 89 per cent of the tickets are booked online through IRCTC website, while the remaining tickets are booked through PRS counters.
The insurance policy is governed by the terms and conditions laid down by the different insurance companies partnered with Railways. If the insurance is opted, then it applies to all passengers in one PNR.
The insurance premium works as a contract between the passenger and the specific insurance company, which issues the policy. The policy protects passengers from the actual departure of the train from the origin station until arrival at the destination station, including events during boarding and deboarding the trains.
The insurance generally covers train accidents and "untoward incidents" as defined under the Railways Act, such as terrorist acts, violent robberies, falling from a running train accidentally etc.
The customer shall receive the policy information directly from insurance companies through the mobile number provided at the time of booking.
