New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with his new Nepalese counterpart Sushila Karki and assured India’s “steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability” in Nepal. It was Karki’s first telephone conversation with a foreign head of state since assuming office.

Soon after the call, Modi posted on X that he had conveyed condolences over the recent loss of lives in Nepal’s protests and extended greetings on the eve of Nepal’s National Day.
In an official statement, New Delhi said Modi congratulated Karki on her appointment, reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Nepal to strengthen bilateral ties, and pledged full support for the progress of the Nepalese people.
Karki, in turn, thanked Modi for India’s support and expressed her commitment to furthering ties. The leaders also agreed to remain in touch.
Last week, Modi had hailed Karki’s appointment as interim Prime Minister, describing her rise as Nepal’s first woman premier as a strong example of women’s empowerment.
