Bhubaneswar: A devastating road accident claimed the lives of two individuals in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Sunday, raising concerns over road safety in the region. The accident occurred at Chandpur square, under the jurisdiction of the Panikoili police station, when a truck collided with a car in the afternoon.
Among the victims was Balaram Nayak, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from Balasore district, who was travelling with his relative, Krushna Chandra Nayak. The two were returning from their hometown of Ghatgaon in Kendujhar to Jajpur when the collision took place. The impact of the crash caused severe injuries to both men, who were immediately rushed to the Jajpur Headquarters Hospital. Tragically, doctors declared them dead upon arrival.
The truck driver responsible for the crash has reportedly fled the scene, and authorities were on the lookout for the individual. The loal Panikoili police immediately launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the accident, including whether safety regulations were violated.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the local community, with residents expressing their sorrow over the loss of the two men. Many have called for greater road safety measures to prevent further accidents in the area, as concerns over speeding and insufficient traffic control have long been raised.
The loss of DSP Balaram Nayak and his relative has cast a somber shadow over the region, leaving behind a grieving community and a call for change in how road safety is managed across the district.
“Today’s incident is not an isolated case on this route. Many such incidents are taking place in this region due to rash driving by lorry driver who carry iron ore from mining belts to steel plants. Many people are dying every year because careless driving sans regular checks by transport authorities. The government must resort to stricter enforcement of road safety laws and the need for public awareness to reduce such fatal mishaps,” said Akshya Rout, a resident of Jajpur.
