Odisha: 40 Injured as Bus Plunges into Field in Nayagarh
The impact shattered the bus’s front windshield, through which passengers managed to crawl out and escape
Bhubaneswar: At least 40 passengers, including the driver, were injured when a private bus travelling from Daringbadi to Bhubaneswar veered off the Nayagarh bypass and plunged nearly 20 feet into a field in the early hours of Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 2 am when the bus, identified as Om Shree Chakadola, reportedly lost control while negotiating the bypass. The vehicle crashed through the roadside barrier, plunged into the field below and overturned, leaving several passengers trapped inside.
The impact shattered the bus’s front windshield, through which passengers managed to crawl out and escape. Local residents and police rushed to the spot and helped rescue the injured passengers.
All the injured were initially taken to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Three passengers, who were reported to be in critical condition, were subsequently referred to a hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The bus was reportedly carrying around 40 passengers when the accident occurred.
The exact cause of the mishap is yet to be established. Preliminary reports suggested that overspeeding may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Police have launched an investigation and are examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.
