SRINAGAR: The catastrophic flash floods that ripped through Nepal—obliterating homes, roads, bridges and leaving hundreds dead and many more missing—have sent shockwaves across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Experts warn that this tragedy is not an isolated event but part of a growing pattern of climate‑driven disasters that directly concerns the twin Union territories and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

In Nepal, the devastation was triggered by a sudden glacial collapse upstream on the Tibet border, unleashing a massive surge of water, ice and debris that tore through multiple towns along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. Entire markets, homes, police posts, bridges were swept away.

India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also highlighted that many regions—including J&K—are vulnerable to the same kind of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) witnessed in Nepal. The NDMA has initiated early‑warning systems for high‑risk glacial lakes, acknowledging that similar disasters have occurred in Kedarnath (2013), Chamoli (2021), Sikkim (2023) and Dharali (2025).

Five glacial lakes in the Kashmir Valley are already classified as having “very high susceptibility” to GLOFs—an alarming indicator that the region shares the same vulnerabilities that led to Nepal’s devastation.

Experts across J&K and other Himalayan states have raised serious concerns about unscientific mining excavations, aggressive infrastructure expansion, and construction in ecologically fragile zones. Development debris is often dumped into riverbeds, narrowing channels and pushing human settlements dangerously close to flood‑prone areas. This combination of climate change and reckless development creates a “cocktail of conditions” that can trigger catastrophic floods.

In J&K, mountains are being cut and blasted for roads, trees felled for construction, and hotels built in sensitive zones. Natural drainage channels are being disturbed, wetlands encroached upon, and floodplains converted into real estate—actions that weaken the region’s natural resilience.

Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, a leading earth scientist and the Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), Awantipora, has issued a stark warning about an impending ecological and natural disaster facing Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Drawing on decades of research, he highlighted rapid glacial retreat and the emergence of unstable glacial lakes across the Himalayan region—conditions that significantly heighten the risk of catastrophic GLOFs capable of devastating infrastructure and settlements downstream.

Romshoo stressed that human-induced pressures are compounding these natural hazards. Encroachment on wetlands, the conversion of natural drainage channels into roads, and unregulated construction have severely constricted the region’s waterways, dramatically amplifying the impact of floods. He noted that large sections of Srinagar’s housing and public infrastructure remain critically vulnerable to major earthquakes, a risk worsened by poor construction practices and inadequate urban planning.

He further warned that drastic land‑use changes, including widespread deforestation and the degradation of natural ecosystems, are actively reshaping the region’s microclimate. These shifts are contributing to increasingly erratic and extreme weather patterns, from sudden cloudbursts to prolonged dry spells, making the Himalayan environment more unpredictable and fragile than ever.

Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric, Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq, echoed these concerns in his sermon at Srinagar’s historic Grand Mosque on Friday. He said the devastation in Nepal and across the Himalayan region should deeply concern everyone, warning that these events reveal how vulnerable mountain ecosystems have become as glaciers collapse.

He expressed solidarity with the people of Nepal and urged J&K to treat the tragedy as a wake‑up call. “We are already seeing more intense rainfall, cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides,” he said. “Climate change is undoubtedly a major factor, but we must also ask whether our own pattern of development is making the situation more dangerous,” he added.

The Mirwaiz warned against reckless exploitation of J&K’s mountains, lakes and rivers for commerce and tourism. He highlighted the cutting of mountains, felling of trees, construction in sensitive areas, and disturbance of natural drainage systems as dangerous trends. He also raised alarm over encroachment of wetlands and flood channels, calling wetlands “natural buffers that absorb excess water.”

Referring to Dal Lake, he lamented its shrinking due to prolonged encroachment and environmental neglect. Quoting the Qur’an—“And do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order” (7:56)—he emphasised that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility.

More than 50 million people across J&K, Ladakh, HP, Uttarakhand and Sikkim live within danger zones where hundreds of hydroelectric dams and border roads have been built with little regard for environmental safeguards.

The Mirwaiz’s message resonates strongly- protecting the environment is not merely about conservation—it is about safeguarding lives, homes and the future of our children.
