NEW DELHI: The Centre has deployed 20 additional companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Delhi to strengthen security amid ongoing protests and the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Security officials said the Union home ministry ordered the redeployment on Tuesday night, with the companies being airlifted from West Bengal to the national capital.

The move is aimed at reinforcing law and order in view of protests by the Cockroach Janta Party and other political demonstrations. Each CRPF company comprises about 100 personnel, taking the additional deployment to around 2,000 personnel.

The companies had been stationed in West Bengal for Assembly elections and were retained there after polling. With the fresh deployment, around 30 companies of CRPF and the Rapid Action Force are now assisting the Delhi Police.

The reinforcement follows clashes during recent protests, officials said.

Security has been tightened across parts of the capital, with police and central forces deployed in sensitive areas. Several Delhi Metro stations near protest sites were closed as a precautionary measure.

Protesters, including students and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party, have been gathering at Jantar Mantar, seeking education reforms and the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Clashes were reported earlier this week when protesters attempting to march towards Parliament were stopped by police using tear gas and batons. While protest organisers alleged use of excessive force, police said some personnel were injured during the incidents.

Separately, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was detained on Tuesday during a sit-in near the Prime Minister’s residence.
