A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck Delhi's North District in the early hours of Sunday morning.

New Delhi: A magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck Delhi's North District in the early hours of Sunday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The tremor occurred at 4:14:01 am IST at a depth of 8 km. Its epicentre was located at 28.721° N latitude and 76.957° E longitude.

In a post on X, the NCS said: "EQ of M: 2.9, On: 02/08/2026 04:14:01 IST, Lat: 28.721 N, Long: 76.957 E, Depth: 8 Km, Location: North District, Delhi."

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes occur at depths ranging from the Earth's surface to about 700 km. Shallow earthquakes, such as this one, generally produce stronger ground shaking and have a greater potential to cause damage than deeper quakes.
