New Delhi: Prime Minister of Japan Ms. Sanae Takaichi will be in New Delhi from July 1-3 for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. This would be the first official visit of Prime Minister Takaichi to India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the summit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

PM Takaichi’s visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. MEA added that the visit reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to further enhance India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

“On her first visit to India as PM, she will hold a summit meeting with PM Modi and the two leaders will attend a big economic forum with business leaders, making a new chapter in Japan-India relations,” Japan’s ambassador to India Mr Ono Keiichi said.

The summit was earlier being planned to be held in Guwahati but was shifted to New Delhi due to time constraint of Ms Takaichi. Japanese media reported quoting sources in the government that her stay in India is likely to be brief and tightly scheduled due to her parliamentary duties, making it difficult for her to travel to and from a regional city.

Meanwhile, ahead of the PM’s visit, ambassador Keiichi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on his country's commitment to investments in electronics, semiconductors and infrastructure in the North East Indian state.
