Berhampore: Fresh violence erupted at Jangipur in Murshidabad of West Bengal early Wednesday when the shop of a Trinamul Congress leader's elder brother was set on fire apparently by an angry mob.
The incident took place at Lakshmi Bibi market area in Dhulian at around 5.45 am. The cosmetics shop belongs to Prabir Saha, elder brother of Dhuliyan Municipality vice chairman and TMC leader Sumit Saha.
As the day broke, locals found the shop in flames. Fire brigade doused the blaze. The shop owner's relatives, Bubai Saha and Sourav Saha, and other shop owners wondered how the outlet caught fire amid a night-long tight patrol by the police. They alleged that petrol was sprinkled at the locked shop from outside while other outlets remained intact. Shamshergunj TMC MLA Amirul Islam demanded CCTV footage be checked and miscreants be arrested.
However SP(Jangipur) Ananda Roy hinted at an electric short circuit that might have caused the fire.
In another incident, two boys, aged around 5-7 years, were injured in an explosion at Pratappur village in Shamsherganj. They had mistaken a crude bomb as a cricket ball that was lying in a field.
The duo was later admitted at Jangipur Hospital. Meanwhile, internet service was restored in Jangipur, except Shamshergunj, amid prohibitory orders. The total number of people arrested rose to 250.
