Congress Moves Adjournment Notices Over Police Action on Students

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday moved adjournment and suspension of business notices in both Houses of Parliament, demanding an immediate discussion on the alleged use of excessive force by security personnel against students protesting over alleged irregularities in the NEET and CBSE examinations.
The notices follow the "Chalo Sansad" march held on July 20, during which students marching from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament were dispersed by the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) using lathi-charge and tear gas, according to reports.
In the Lok Sabha, Congress General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal submitted an Adjournment Motion seeking a discussion on what he described as the "brutal, unprovoked, and disproportionate" use of force against peacefully protesting students.

In the Rajya Sabha, senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury submitted a notice under Rule 267 seeking suspension of business to discuss the incident.
Her notice alleged the use of lathi-charge, tear gas and pellet guns against protesters, and also questioned the alleged deployment of unidentified persons in plain clothes to assault students.
Chowdhury sought a detailed statement from the Union Home Minister on the circumstances leading to the incident, the authorisation of the use of force and the identity of those deployed. She also demanded a statement from the Prime Minister on the government's response and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The notices came a day after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged use of force against students during the July 20 protest.
In a letter shared on X, Gandhi asked whether the Home Minister had authorised the use of pellet guns and sought clarification on the identity of individuals in plain clothes who were allegedly seen assaulting students. He also alleged that women students were attacked and claimed that several people, including a journalist, sustained serious injuries during the protest.
