Hyderabad: Residents of 50 colonies in Dammaiguda have approached the Central Pollution Control Board to prevent the burning of dead bodies in an open area between the Dammaiguda lake and the main road.

The local gram panchayat and collectorate have failed to act on their complaints. The ground being used as a crematorium is surrounded by the colonies.

Mr Venkata Subba Rao, a resident who has been following the complaint with the authorities, said, “The crematorium came up four years ago. At that time, the colonies around had not developed. But the practice is continuing even after the houses have come up.

There is no proper compound wall. Rituals are carried out in the open near the road and the lake.”

Neighbours complain of bad smell due to burning dead bodies. The ash spreads around homes, depending on the direction of the wind. During the rainy season when there are multiple dead bodies coming at the same time, there is a terrible stench.
