Chennai: The local bodies elections in TN is likely to be held only after April. According to State Election Commission, current electoral roll of TN legislative Assembly will be the basis of the panchayat electoral roll and that it would be in a position to prepare the corresponding panchayat electoral roll only after the receipt of the Assembly electoral roll.

As per the Bill to amend the TN Panchayats Act, 1994, tabled in the Assembly on Monday by local administration minister S. P. Velumani the SEC stated that the teachers who form the core polling personnel would be available only after class 10 and plus-2 final examinations and paper valuation work are over.

Hence, the government decided to amend the Act to extend the term of office of the special officers for six months from December 2016, to administer the village panchayats, panchayat union councils and district panchayats.
