Chennai: It is no longer corporation of Chennai as Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday unveiled a plaque via video-conferencing to rename the city’s local body as Greater Chennai corporation (GCC). The renaming was in accordance to a GO dated October 26, 2015, after the corporation expanded from 174 sq. km to 426 sq. km in 2011.

“The Chennai corporation is the oldest local body in the country and the second oldest in the world having been formed on September 29, 1688. In terms of population, it is the fourth highest in the country and the 31st in the world,” said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy.

Duraisamy led the council in giving a standing ovation, that lasted nearly 30 seconds, for Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for “bestowing the privilege” of being part of a Greater Chennai corporation on the council.
