Hyderabad: Hyderabad police took 98 people into preventive custody for attempting to protest against the arrest of poet P. Varavara Rao, at Ambedkar statue on lower tank bund on Wednesday. The protestors belonging to various human rights organisations were detained for failing to take permission from the police prior to agitating.

Condemning the arrest of Virasam (Viplava Rachayithala Sangham) founder P. Varavara Rao by the Pune police in an alleged case of conspiring to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, members of Virasam, New Democracy Party, Telangana Praja Front (TPF), Telangana Democratic Front (TDF), Democratic Student Union (DSU), Telangana Vidyarthi Vedika (TVV), Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) and others wanted to stage a protest at Dr B.R. Ambedkar statue on Tank Bund.

At around 11.30 am, around 100 people gathered and started protesting. The police who had received a tip-off about the protest, asked the agitators to leave.

But as the number of protesters started to swell, additional forces were pulled in and about 92 protesters were detained at Gandhi Nagar, Musheerabad, Kanchanbagh, Begum Bazaar and Bolarum. DCP (central zone) P. Viswa Prasad said, “As many as 92 protesters were detained and they all set free later.”
