Chennai: Chennai city police commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Wednesday installed eight automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras that can identify vehicles by reading the number of plates on East Coast Road.

The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras would help them in curbing crimes like vehicle thefts and rash driving on accident-prone ECR stretch.

The commissioner on Tuesday installed 209 new CCTV cameras and eight ANPR cameras within the Neelankarai and Kanathur policy limits. Addressing the media, he said that cameras will be able to read different fonts on the number plate and the cameras are equipped with infrared vision, which can effectively function during the night.  “During a traffic violation, a picture of the driver, vehicle, the date and time will be stored automatically. This software will also help police detect stolen and suspicious vehicles,” he added.
